It’s interesting going through various home security surveys, as they identify many of the key areas where homeowners can improve their home safety.
Here’s a snapshot of some of the main points raised in surveys undertaken by the police, the security industry and insurance companies.
Main Home Security Shortcomings:
Looking first at vulnerable spots around the home, which put the property at greatest risk of a break-in, the main areas of concern are:
Inadequate door and window locks
Poor lighting
Secondly, focussing on what are considered to be the most effective security measures, here are the three best ways to prevent burglaries:
Install high-quality locks
(or a combination of all 3)
As an addendum, surveys have shown that regular security maintenance services, including intruder alarms and other security equipment and making sure they are regularly updated, are a vital component of effective home security.
On this last point, employing the services of a professional security company, is also seen as being of high priority. They will be able to carry out a detailed assessment and provide security equipment recommendations tailored specifically to the property (best not to opt for a one-size-fits-all solution).
Types of home burglaries
Whilst these can vary, the ones most commonly identified are:
Forced Entry: Thieves gaining access by breaking windows or forcing open doors.
Unsecured Entry: Often resulting from what’s described as “homeowners’ forgetfulness”, one of the easiest and most common points of entry is via unlocked doors or windows.
Sneaking-In: You don’t want to confront a burglar, but many of them are brazen enough, or unaware that someone is at home when they sneak in. Typically, they will enter through an unlocked door or window and grab valuables lying around, before making a quick, silent getaway.
Distraction Burglary: This is where a burglar deliberately distracts the homeowner, often posing as a utility company employee or door-to-door salesperson. Whilst this is going on, an accomplice nips into the property and makes off with various items. Be on guard for this type of situation.
Opportunistic Burglary: Often acting on impulse, a burglar sees expensive items in full view. If there’s an easy entry through an open door or window, a theft can happen within seconds.
