About Stourbridge

The market town of Stourbridge is within the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley in the West Midlands, situated on the River Stour about 12 miles west of Birmingham. Historically in Worcestershire, during the Industrial Revolution, it became the centre of British glassmaking. The 2011 UK census showed the population of Stourbridge to be 63,298.

Stourbridge is the most affluent town in the borough, consisting of residential streets interspersed with green spaces. Mary Stevens Park, opened in 1931, has a lake, a bandstand, a cafe, and a mixture of open spaces and woodland.

Although there are currently no official figures for the numbers of unemployed in Stourbridge, the percentage claiming jobseekers allowance was 2.2% - well below the England average of 3.3%.

Industry

In 2010, Stourbridge was awarded Fairtrade Town status. The town gives its name to local glass production, which has been manufactured since the early 1600s. The rich natural resources of coal and fireclay for lining furnaces made it the perfect location for the industry. Glassmaking peaked in the 19th century, encouraged by the famous glassmaking family, the Jeavons.

Today, being close to the M5, M6 and M42 motorways, Stourbridge is a great place for business, with an outstanding skills base based around a strong engineering culture. There is also a thriving creative community in the town.

Retail

In recent years, the town centre has seen major regeneration. Stourbridge High Street is home to a mix of chain and independent shops, pubs, coffee shops, restaurants, gyms and a yoga studio. The Crown Centre Shopping Mall at the bottom of Stourbridge High Street opened in 2013 at a cost of £50m, housing a 60,000 sq ft Tesco, a two-level underground car park, six retail stores and a central food court. Stourbridge Bus Station underwent substantial redevelopment and re-opened as Stourbridge Interchange in April 2012.

Stourbridge is the second-safest major town in the West Midlands.

The overall crime rate in Stourbridge in 2020 was 61 crimes per 1,000 people - 49% lower than the West Midlands rate of 91 per 1,000 residents.

For England, Wales, and Northern Ireland as a whole, Stourbridge is among the top 20 safest major towns.

Stourbridge's least common crime is personal theft, with 15 offences recorded in 2020, a decrease of 53% from the 2019 figure.

In February 2020, Stourbridge was the worst major town in the West Midlands for burglary, with 81 crimes reported and a crime rate of 1.2 per 1,000 inhabitants.

The most common crimes in Stourbridge are violence and sexual offences, with 1,686 offences during 2020, 16% higher than the 2019.
