According to Home Office figures in the 2023 Commercial Victimisation Survey (CVS), which examines the extent of crime against all businesses in England and Wales, over 400,000 premises were victims of a commercial crime during the previous 12-month period. That equates to almost 30% of every business premises in the land.
The CVS Survey revealed that:
The largest percentage of crimes (14%) were classed as customer theft. This was followed by burglary, including attempted burglary (8%) and vandalism (8%), whilst 7% were attributed to assaults or threats against employees or customers.
According to the latest police-recorded crime data relating to the year ending December 2023, occurrences of shoplifting and robbery at business properties were above pre-pandemic levels.
Wholesale and retail businesses were at most risk: 41% reported a crime during the previous 12 months, indicating a longer-term rising trend.
Across all types of business premises, customer theft and assaults were the crimes that had the biggest negative impact.
During the survey period, over half of the premises hit by crime were targeted on more than one occasion.
